Chapters 1 through 4 of this report highlight progress within the four sections during the period January 1 to December 31, 1988. The Analytical Chemistry Division is organized into four major sections, each of which may carry out any of the three types of work mentioned above. The division performs chemical and physicochemical analyses of virtually all types. The division carries out a wide variety of chemical work that typically involves analytical research and/or development plus the utilization of analytical capabilities to expedite programmatic interests. (2) Programmatic Research, Development, and more » Utilization. Emphasis is on problems and needs identified with ORNL and Department of Energy (DOE) programs however, attention is also given to advancing the analytical sciences themselves. The division maintains a program to conceptualize, investigate, develop, assess, improve, and implement advanced technology for chemical and physicochemical measurements. These functions fall into the following general categories: (1) Analytical Research, Development, and Implementation. As such, it serves a multitude of functions for a clientele that exists both in and outside of ORNL. The Analytical Chemistry Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a large and diversified organization. Some 308,981 determinations were performed. Approximately 69 articles, 41 proceedings, and 31 reports were published, and 151 oral presentations were given during this reporting period. Publications, oral presentations, professional activities, educational programs, and seminars are cited in Chapters 7 and 8. Information about quality assurance, safety, and training programs is presented in Chapter 6, along with a tabulation of analyses rendered. A brief discussion of the division's role in an especially important environmental program is given in Chapter 5.
